Works in stone

The almost complete absence of metals in the Mayan area meant in practice that stone was the material used to resolve the problems of daily existence. However, we find a whole range of works that demonstrate the skills attained by specialists in cutting limestone, jade, obsidian, flint and other materials. These skills were applied to architecture as well as sculpture or in creating the small objects that formed part of the funerary furnishings. The persistence in the use of stone implements is still in evidence today, such as the fiat stones still used for grinding grains.
