This was in the area of
the port, outside the city walls. The builders took advantage
of a marked slope leading down to a flat area to construct what
must have been imposing tiers of seating. In spite of the appalling
treatment they have suffered over the centuries, the ruins still
retain, if only partially, the three essential structural elements
of a Roman theatre: the cavea (tiers of seating), the orchestra
and the scaena. The former opulence of the theatre can
be seen in the monumental capitals and the statues with imperial
inscriptions of men in togas and armour, which would have formed
part of the scaenae frons. These can now be seen in the
National Archaeological Museum of Tarragona.
