This is one
of the most emblematic monuments of the city. Located next to
the Via Augusta about six kilometres from Tàrraco, it is
a typical example of a tower-shaped funeral monument. It has a
square base (4.47 x 4.72 metres), with three superimposed bodies
of decreasing size. On one facade of the second (middle) body
there are two high-relief figures representing Atis (a god of
oriental origin related to the funeral cult). The erroneous identification
of these sculptures as the Scipio brothers was the origin of the
name traditionally given to this monument. Judging by its characteristics,
it was built in the first half of the first century AD.
