The funerary problems of late-imperial Tarraco
Funerary crypt found during the excavation of the Casa del Mar.

In the last ten years several archaeological excavations have uncovered new late-Imperial burial areas. These have added considerably to our knowledge of the subject.

The finds on the land occupied by the Parc Central shopping centre showed that the Early-Christian Necropolis actually continued to the north of the area currently excavated. The archaeological finds included a large number of burial sites, the structures of a large early-Christian complex made up of a 5th century basilica and a building which probably housed the seat of a religious community.

There are other known and well-documented burial sites, for example on Ramón y Cajal Avenue (Prat de la Riba Street) and on Pere Martell Street (between Eivissa and Francesc Bastos Streets, near the Casa del Mar). A new find has been made relatively far from the city at the foot of Mount Oliva (Mas de Mallol).

All these sites have provided us with extensive and varied information on the chronology and type of burial in the late-Roman period.
