| Partial view of Room IV, devoted to items used in the day-to-day life of the inhabitants of Tarraco. |
The items exhibited in this room constitute
a basis for our knowledge and understanding of day-to-day life
in Roman times.
We must remember, however, that lifestyles
changed during the long period of ancient Rome. It is normal,
therefore, that we should observe considerable differences between
the tastes and customs of the Republican period and those of the
Imperial period, and that those of the first centuries of the
Imperial period should be different from those of the Low Empire.
It should also be taken into account
that the lifestyles illustrated by such material items can vary
greatly depending on whether they come from an urban or a rural
society, or from a privileged or poor sector of society.
Items that show us something of the Roman
way of life and customs in our region include crockery (plates,
bowls, cups, etc.), domestic objects (grinders, pans, lamps),
items of personal use (hair pins, broaches, rings) and toys (tiny
kitchen utensils, babies' rattles, dice).
