The Roman civilization produced a large
number of written documents on durable materials (stone, marble,
metal, pottery, etc.). These provide us with a wealth of information
about various aspects of social, political, economic and religious
life in the Classical Antiquity.
Latin epigraphy is made up of sacred,
honorary and, most abundantly, funerary inscriptions that explain
the history of people and families.
They are often written in large letters,
making them easy to read.
Another notable characteristic of the
Latin inscriptions is the almost infinite number of abbreviations
of words and names and also the use of initials and links between
letters.
Although they are usually written in
Latin, some are in other languages, such as Greek. They were the
filter, the passing of knowledge and survival in a Roman world
made up of diverse cultures. Latin epigraphy was an important
vehicle for the spreading of culture.
